“Dr. Lonnie Smith: Evolution of the B-3 Revolution” with Dr. Lonnie Smith
“It’s an extension of my being. It’s a part of my lens. It breathes for me; it speaks for me,” Dr. Lonnie Smith says of his instrument of choice: the Hammond B-3. Born in Buffalo, NY in 1942, Smith was introduced to the Hammond organ as a teenager and began immersing himself in the records of first-generation organists, Wild Bill Davis, Bill Doggett and Jimmy Smith. In time, he rose to join their ranks as an innovator on organ and in jazz music.
Today, he continues to lead and innovate on his instrument and is slated to receive the NEA Jazz Masters Award, the highest honor in jazz, in April of 2017. For this Jazz In June/NPL West clinic, Smith will offer somewhat of a career retrospective, sharing tales and music that span his lengthy and celebrated life as a leading figure in jazz.
